Maths starters for KS3, KS4 and KS5

Downloadable starter activities for secondary maths lessons

Maths starter activities are a great way to engage students and get their brains working at the beginning of a lesson. Choose from PowerPoints for whole class quizzes on the interactive whiteboard or starter questions or worksheets for individual or paired tasks. Whether you're teaching key stage 3 or key stage 4, our lesson starters cover a range of topics to kickstart your maths lessons.

For younger key stage 3 students, you may want to start with some basic arithmetic problems. Try our times table loop cards, fractions starter questions or decimal of the day. As students progress through key stage 3, you may want to introduce more challenging starter activities such as our indices and standard form lesson starter or inequalities bingo.

For GCSE students, you may want to focus on problems that require a deeper understanding of maths concepts. Try our odd-one-out algebra starter, vectors bingo or matching linear equations and graphs. And our practice makes perfect quizzes are great for consolidating algebra skills at GCSE.

The key to successful maths starter activities is to make them engaging and challenging, but not too difficult or intimidating. Our teaching resources will help your students develop their maths skills and confidence, setting them up for the lesson ahead and for future success.
