A resource developed for Core maths as an early introduction to Fermi Estimations and the problem solving cycle.
The PowerPoint task begins with the simple question: how many people could fit on the Isle of Wight? Students need to consider the information and calculations needed to answer the question.
As a follow-up, there are further questions that they can use their knowledge to solve. These cover:
- population density
- reading and writing large numbers
- converting between metric area units
- area of simple 2D shapes
- types of data
