One of our series of Practical maths activities, developed during Coronavirus (Covid-19) lockdown, for KS3-4 to get students thinking about the maths involved in everyday home-life activities. They are suitable for all ages and abilities, families can easily get involved and students will produce a diverse selection of work to hand in

This activity will get students thinking about the maths involved in completing an exercise challenge. The first part of the task is active: decide on an exercise challenge (climbing the height of Ben Nevis on a staircase at home, running a marathon in your own garden or walking the length of Heathrow's runways in the hallway) The second part is to think: how long will it take to complete this challenge, what maths is involved in calculating and completing this activity? The third part is to then ponder a range of related questions on various topics, graded in difficulty.
