Students read an excerpt from the prospectus for the prestigious, and entirely fake, BODMAS international school (school motto: Everything in the right order), packed with facts and figures about the school, its students and staff then answer a set of questions about what they have read.

The mathematical content is varied, including areas, percentages, ratios, volumes, speeds, currency conversions and more, set within this comprehension exercise. Teachers could easily adapt the article and/or the questions being asked.

This is a resource suitable for functional skills maths and for teachers wishing to promote literacy. You can find more information about this in the maths section of Closing the word gap: activities for the classroom – secondary which we developed in partnership with the OUP.
