A mechanical linkage is a number of rigid links connected by joints, some or all of which may be movable in relation to each other.

If two or more links are movable with respect to a fixed link, the linkage is called a mechanism, but if no link can move, it is called a structure.

Students design linkages and determine whether they are mechanisms or structures. They follow their own lines of enquiry, make and test their own conjectures and explain their generalisations.
