Isle of Wight

A resource developed for Core maths as an early introduction to Fermi Estimations and the problem solving cycle.

The PowerPoint task begins with the simple question: how many people could fit on the Isle of Wight? Students need to consider the information and calculations needed to answer the question.

As a follow-up, there are further questions that they can use their knowledge to solve. These cover:

  • population density
  • reading and writing large numbers
  • converting between metric area units
  • area of simple 2D shapes
  • types of data

The Word document contains similar questions for further practice.
